"Where is your faith?"

>> Sunday, November 10, 2013

Do you ever have those times when it's blatantly obvious what God is teaching and/or reminding you?

That has been the story of my life for the last several weeks. God has been using several everyday (and seemingly mundane) events and activities in my life - conversations with friends and loved ones, passages I've "happened" to read during my devotions, etc. - to make it crystal clear that I have a lot of growing to do in a particular area of my walk with Him.

That area would be faith.

From a purely human perspective, it seems like nearly everything in my life hasn't "gone according to plan" (ie. "gone wrong") lately, and I have allowed that to cause worry and discouragement in my mind and heart. Sure, I know the (now almost cliche) Christian catch phrases and Bible verses we commonly use when we feel this way: "all things work together for good...," "It's in God's hands," "God knew this would happen before I was born," "God won't give you anything you can't handle," etc.

But do I truly, genuinely, without reserve, believe that?

After taking an honest look at how I have handled life's "curve balls" over the last several weeks, I have to say the answer is no.

God has allowed me to experience a storm of trying circumstances. His intention has been, not to drown me, but to strengthen my faith. Like Peter, I have chosen to look at the wind and the waves and forget the One who orchestrated their design. I have sunk into the sea of worry and anxiety more than once, but God has always pulled me up and helped me continue to walk on that tempestuous sea towards Him.

We may fret over how the bills are going to be paid when our bank balance is low, when we'll get that raise we've been waiting for, when we'll meet "the one," etc - that's normal. It's normal for us as humans to want to know what the future holds so we can be prepared. We don't like to be taken by surprise (well, some of us might...but I digress). We can't see what the future holds, but we know the One who holds the future. God won't allow anything to happen to us outside of His will. And that. my friend, is a truly comforting thought.

Father,

I don't know how these seemingly impossible things are going to work out. I don't know where the money is going to come from to pay my bills. I don't know how or where I'm going to find work. I can't see how these things are right now working for good and going to work for good in the future, but I know You do. Thank You for taking care of my every need, even the ones that don't cross my mind.

Please calm my anxious heart. Increase my faith.  Help me keep my eyes off the stormy sea of doubt, fear and worry and on You instead so I may walk on water in the faith and peace only You can give.

"But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?" Matthew 14:30-31

A Cry from the Heart

>> Friday, September 7, 2012

Father in Heaven,

      I need to trust you more than ever . . .

                                                      . . .  to believe that you work all things out for my good.

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28

                                                        . . . to fight this battle I'm facing.

The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.
Exodus 14:14

                                                     . . . to be my God who provides beyond my limitations.

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19

                                                           . . . to be the light to my darkness.

For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.
Psalm 18:28

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Psalm 119:105

Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the LORD shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.
Isaiah 60:20

  . . . when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me.
Micah 7:8

Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
John 8:12

And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
Revelation 22:5

                                           . . . to use these trials, these struggles, the hurt, the tears, the painful circumstances, to strengthen and purify me and to glorify You.

I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee . . .
II Kings 20:5

 They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.
Psalm 126:5

But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies. For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.
Lamentations 3:23-33

Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
John 16:20

 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;
II Corinthians 4:17

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes . . .
Revelation 7:17; 21:4

Help me take my eyes off my circumstances and the cares of life and keep them fixed on the Cross of Christ for as long as You choose to keep me on this earth. Only then will I be able to have a right view of myself, my circumstances, and Your will.

But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.
Galatians 6:14

 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:2

My father's way may twist and turn, my heart may throb and ache,
But in my soul I'm glad to know He maketh no mistake.

My cherished plans may go astray, my hopes now fade away,
But still I'll trust my Lord to lead, for He doth know the way.

Though night be dark and it may seem that day will never break;
I'll pin my faith, my all in Him, He maketh no mistake.

There's so much now I cannot see, my eyesight's far too dim;
But come what may, I'll simply trust and leave it all to Him.

For by and by the mist will lift, and plain it all He'll make -
Through all the way, though dark to me, He made not one mistake

Wait on the Lord

>> Saturday, September 1, 2012

Our spiritual lives are a lot like the young tree in this picture. Someone had to take a great deal of time to tend it - water it, turn its soil, etc. - in order for it to grow into what you see here. Such care requires a great deal of patience. Trees don't grow overnight. Neither does our spiritual life. It must be tended with great care and patience, and growth will result. The young bud of our spiritual life might not be growing as rapidly as we would like, but, with the Lord's help, it will eventually blossom into a full-grown, mature testament to His work in our lives.

Perhaps the growth rate of your spiritual life isn't what's worrying you right now. You may be facing a trial or difficulty that, if you're honest, you want out of as quickly as possible. God has a reason for allowing that trial to come into your life. Your job is to patiently endure through the trial as long as God allows it to remain in your life and to learn as much as you can from it (much easier said than done, I know).

Trees are strengthened by storms. We are spiritually strengthened by trials.

"It may seem an easy thing to wait, but it is one of the postures which a Christian soldier learns not without years of teaching. Marching and quick-marching are much easier to God's warriors than standing still. There are hours of perplexity when the most willing spirit, anxiously desirous to serve the Lord, knows not what part to take.

"Then what shall it do? Vex itself by despair? Fly back in cowardice, turn to the right hand in fear, or rush forward in presumption?

"No, but simply wait.

"Wait in prayer, however. Call upon God, and spread the case before Him; tell Him your difficulty, and plead His promise of aid. In dilemmas between one duty and another, it is sweet to be humble as a child, and wait with simplicity of soul upon the Lord. It is sure to be well with us when we feel and know our own folly, and are heartily willing to be guided by the will of God. But wait in faith. Express your unstaggering confidence in Him; for unfaithful, untrusting waiting, is but an insult to the Lord. Believe that if He keep you tarrying even till midnight, yet He will come at the right time; the vision shall come and shall not tarry. Wait in quiet patience, not rebelling because you are under the affliction, but blessing your God for it.

"Never murmur against the second cause, as the children of Israel did against Moses; never wish you could go back to the world again, but accept the case as it is, and put it as it stands, simply and with your whole heart, without any self-will, into the hand of your covenant God, saying, 'Now, Lord, not my will, but Thine be done. I know not what to do; I am brought to extremities, but I will wait until Thou shalt cleave the floods, or drive back my foes. I will wait, if Thou keep me many a day, for my heart is fixed upon Thee alone, O God, and my spirit waiteth for Thee in the full conviction that Thou wilt yet be my joy and my salvation, my refuge and my strong tower.' "
- C.H. Spurgeon

Let none that wait on thee be ashamed:
Psalm 25:3

Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.
Psalm 27:14

Those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.
Psalm 37:9

I will wait on thy name; for it is good before thy saints.
Psalm 52:9

My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.
Psalm 62:5

I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.
Psalm 130:5

Wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.
Proverbs 20:22

But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Isaiah 40:31

The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.
Lamentations 3:25-26

I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me.
Micah 7:7

Idols and the Living God

>> Tuesday, August 21, 2012

Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:
Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.
 {Jeremiah 10:1-5}

One of the many reasons God commanded the Israelites to annihilate the pagan nations in the Promised Land of Canaan was to limit Israel's exposure to idol worship. Most (if not all) of these nations practiced some kind of idol worship. Rituals associated with this idol worship included showing respect and honor to statues - so-called "physical likenesses" of various man made deities and gods made out of wood, stone, bone, and precious metals - by exhibiting various body postures (such as bowing), burning incense, kissing or reverently touching various parts on the god's "likeness," providing offerings of fruit, animals, even humans (especially children). All of these things were done with the hope that the god would do something for them in return. Whether the god would grant your request varied from deity to deity. Some gods were thought to be temperamental and would (or would not) answer you based on how they felt on that particular day. Other gods based their answers on your moral uprightness, the quality of your sacrifice, your level of devotion to that particular deity/religion, etc. Sadly, many of these practices and beliefs are kept alive by various pagan cults and religions today. These practices, and the mindset(s) that result(s) from such practices, are just as deadly to people's spiritual lives today as they were all those years ago during the conquest of Canaan.

As you probably know, Israel did not fully obey God's command to destroy all of the pagan nations living in Canaan, and they paid the price. A reading of the Old Testament reveals many, many times when the nation of Israel was captivated by and enslaved to idol worship due to the influence of those nations they allowed to  remain intact. Even Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, was led astray into the sin of worshiping pagan gods and deities. They became distracted and enamored by the fleshly appeal such worship has, and they left their first love - the God who led them out of bondage in Egypt, kept them alive in the Wilderness, and provided them a Promised Land to call their own - to follow after false gods made by the hands and minds of men.

Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.
Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.
But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities.
Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men.
But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.
{Jeremiah 10:7-10}

Aren't you glad we serve a God who isn't made on a workbench in a woodcarver's or metalworker's shop? You never have to worry that He might not be in a mood to hear and/or answer your prayers. He is always consistent - "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever" (Hebrews 13:8). He loves you - yes, you! - and He has made a way for you to have a personal relationship with Him through the death of His Son, Jesus Christ, to pay the penalty for your sins. He has given you His precious words to read and study to help you get to know Him.

We serve the living God, my friends.

I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:
Isaiah 46:9-10

Promises That Strengthen

>> Friday, August 10, 2012

This post is a conglomeration of verses and passages of Scripture the Lord has used to strengthen me recently. I hope they are an encouragement to you.

My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.
{Psalm 121:2-8}

But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.
{Proverbs 1:33}

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
{Isaiah 26:3}

He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: but they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
{Isaiah 40:29-31}

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
{Isaiah 41:10}

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
{Jeremiah 29:11-13}

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
{Matthew 11:28-30}

And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.
{John 10:28-29}

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
{John 14:16-18}

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
{John 14:27}

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
{Romans 8:1-2}

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
{Romans 8:28}

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
{Romans 8:35-39}

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
{I Corinthians 10:13}

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
{Philippians 4:19}

He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.
{Hebrews 13:5b-6}

 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
 {I Peter 1:3-5}

Now, dear reader, it's your turn - what are some of your favorite "promise passages"? Please don't be shy! :)

Marks of the Christian Life

>> Thursday, August 9, 2012

What does a Christian look like?

In other words: what qualities are Christians characterized by? What kind of speech does a Christian use? How do Christians treat others? How do Christians handle conflict?

Let's take a look at Colossians 3 for some answers to these questions.

Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. {Colossians 3:12-15}

This passage paints a clear and direct picture of the marks of the Christian life.

Let's break this down, shall we?

{ ... holy and beloved ... } This describes our position in Christ as "the elect of God." The remaining qualities in the list are a natural outpouring of this.

{ ... bowels of mercies ... } Those who owe so much to the mercy of the Father are to be merciful to those who need mercy (see Luke 6:36).

{ ... kindness ... } Christians are characterized by a kindness that extends to everyone, not just those who are kind to us.

{ ... humbleness of mind ... } A Christian practices a humble mindset and thought pattern to match a humble demeanor (see Matthew 11:29 and Philippians 2:3).

{ ... meekness ... } Christians patiently bear the anger of others and bridle their own anger towards those who have provoked them.

{ ... longsuffering ... } Continued forbearance and patience towards those who continue to provoke (see I Corinthians 13:4). Since God is longsuffering, Christians are to exercise longsuffering to others in the same fashion.

{ ... forbearing one another ... } We all have something that others need patience to bear with. In the same way, we should patiently bear with others in what is disagreeable to us. In other words, Christians are to be characterized by a mutual patience for the imperfections we all have as sinful, fallen creatures.

{ ... forgiving one another ... even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye ... } Quarrels happen, even among "the elect of God." But it is our duty to forgive each other. A Christian is characterized by a readiness and willingness to forgive, because Christ forgave us.

{ ... put on charity ... } Unconditional love ("charity") is the capstone of the Christian faith, and an overriding principle in a Christian's life.

{ ... let the peace of God rule in your hearts ... } The Christian life is marked by a peaceable disposition, a peaceable spirit that keeps the peace and makes peace. This "peace of God" is working in all of those who are His. We are called to this peace - the privilege of peace with God and the duty of peace with our brothers and sisters as a body in Christ.

{ ... be ye thankful ... } Gratitude towards God and the provisions He has made for us (spiritual, material, etc.) is an important mark of the Christian life because He deserves our gratitude. It also sets the tone for a person's attitude, their disposition toward others and their outlook on life.

Colossians 3:12-15 serves as an excellent checklist for what the Christian life looks like. Each quality is just as important as the other. They all work together to exemplify Christ.

Prayerfully meditate on this checklist and ask the Lord to show you which qualities are lacking in your life. None of us are perfect, so none of us will ever exemplify Christ perfectly. We are not called to be perfect - we are called to strive toward Christ-likeness.

What does a Christian look like?

A Christian looks like Christ.

Pride Destroys

>> Tuesday, August 7, 2012

God wants to be the center of your life, because that's where He belongs. Someone who is prideful believes they has need of nothing but deserves everything, because they placed themselves at the center of their life. God is constantly working to de-centralize humanity, this problem of pride. Pride is the root of a great many of the roadblocks we encounter in our spiritual life as we seek to learn and grow to become more like Christ.

James 4:6 says, "God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble." God wants your reliance and your focus to be on Him (as it should be), not on yourself.

Nebuchadnezzar was the king of Babylon and one of the world leaders of his day. He fought and conquered many nations, including Israel. He took everything from those he conquered, except their false gods. He knew he could get more cooperation from them if he let them keep their gods. This is the same tactic Satan uses today. He may take your marriage, your children, your health, your purity, your joy, your money, your peace of mind, your job, any number of things.

The one thing he will not take is your "god." Your "god" is anything you allow, out of the pride of your heart, to take the place of God or in place of obedience to God. Satan's goal is to turn your heart away from the one true God. He leaves your "god" in your life to accomplish that goal.

Some examples of "gods" would be:

  • Alcohol
  • Drugs (prescription or illegal)
  • Independent spirit
  • Anger
  • Pleasure
  • Work/career
  • Pornography
  • Self-destructive actions and thought patterns
  • Jealousy
  • Money
  • Fame/popularity
  • Eating disoders (anorexia/bulimia)

In Daniel 4, Nebuchadnezzar recounts the story of how his pride brought him very close to destruction.
The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty? {Daniel 4:30}
Nebuchadnezzar was so filled with pride that he set himself up as god. He was completely self-absorbed and self-satisfied, even after he was warned by Daniel about God's imminent judgment (see v. 27).

God mercifully stayed His judgment for an entire year, giving Nebuchadnezzar plenty of time to repent. After voicing his prideful boast in verse 30, God decided that the time for judgment had come.
While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee. And they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over thee, until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws. {Daniel 4:31-33}
 Nebuchadnezzar believed in the existence of God. He knew God can work miracles, that He had the power to reveal mysteries to Daniel, that He had the power to deliver the Hebrews from their enemies. But Nebuchadnezzar's heart was filled with pride. He wanted to be the king of his life. God had to bring him to the end of himself, causing him to live as an animal for seven years, in order for him to humble himself before God.
And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation: And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?  At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me.  Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase. {Daniel 4:34-37}
How have you displayed pride and/or self-absorption? How have you, like King Nebuchadnezzar, ignored God's Word and His warnings about that pride?

Take some time to get alone with God. Allow Him to show you your pride in its real light. Confess those areas of pride in your life and put God back on the throne of your life.

Pride erects a little kingdom of its own, and acts as sovereign in it.
William Hazlitt

Live Dangerously

>> Saturday, August 4, 2012

I came across this video while perusing YouTube.

Dr. Mohler really hit the nail on the head. Christianity isn't "safe." It isn't supposed to be "safe." We are called to live dangerously for the sake of the One we serve. We are called to be a bold, shining light in the darkness that is this world. Those who cannot go out and live dangerously, or are not called to go, can live dangerously by unashamedly providing the support and encouragement needed by those who are called to go.

Christian apathy is a scary thing. Light cannot fight darkness if it is weak. Determine to live dangerously from this day forward. Reject the temptation to stay with the comfortable and familiar. God will use you to further His kingdom in the way He has planned for you to do so if you will choose to live dangerously.

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Mark 16:15

How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
Romans 10:14-15

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Ephesians 6:12

He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.

When we suffer bad/negative experiences, Satan uses these hurts to encourage bad attitudes and habits, which often leads to unhealthy and unbiblical choices. These unhealthy, sinful, and unbiblical choices and habits in your life are the basis for the problems you are living with right now. They are the consequences for seeking relief outside of God. Instead of facing pain, sin, hurt, and/or wrong choices responsibly, we tend to try to find a way to shift the blame and live in denial of the part we have played and the responsibility that lies with us in changing our behavior.

Sure, you want relief from the pain, but you don't want to have to change. Most often, the pain you cause yourself is as great or ever greater than the pain caused by your experience(s). But your denial of your responsibility keeps you in bondage to your unbiblical, sinful, self-destructive lifestyle.

{ You feel the way you feel, because you think the way you think, and act the way you act. Jim Berg }

What we call denial is what God calls self-deception.
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: for he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. {James 1:22-24}
 During the time of the Apostles, a group of Jews did not react favorably when Paul and Barnabus confronted them with their own sin.
Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: and by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses. Beware therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets; behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you. And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.
Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God. And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.
But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region. But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts. {Acts 13:38-50}
 The Jews didn't like it when Paul and Barnabus began preaching to the Gentiles. When Paul and Barnabus spoke out against their envy and jealousy against the Gentiles, the Jews drove them away. They were unwilling to hear the truth about themselves. How often to we react in a similar way when a fellow Christian, or God Himself, exposes areas of our life that are in need of change.

Even David, whom God called "a man after His own heart," struggled with the sin of denial.
And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house. And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.
And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David. And when Uriah was come unto him, David demanded of him how Joab did, and how the people did, and how the war prospered. And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and there followed him a mess of meat from the king. But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.
And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Camest thou not from thy journey? why then didst thou not go down unto thine house? And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing. And David said to Uriah, Tarry here to day also, and to morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow. And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.
 And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die. {II Samuel 11:2-15}

David thought that making Uriah's death look like an accident would ease his guilt, but it didn't. If you read further in the passage, you will see just how much pain David's denial caused in this situation.

When you repeatedly disobey God's law, your heart becomes calloused and you are no longer sensitive to the guilt of your sin. Denial leads you into deeper sin habits.

Examine the list below and ask God to reveal to you the areas where denial is keeping you in bondage to sin. You may want to add more as God reveals additional areas of sin in your life.

  • Sexual immorality (Galatians 5:19)
  • Lust (Colossians 3:5)
  • Discord (Galatians 5:20)
  • Anger (Galatians 5:20)
  • Dissention (Galatians 5:20)
  • Envy (Galatians 5:21)
  • Idolatry (Galatians 5:20; Ephesians 5:5)
  • Cheating (I Corinthians 6:8)
  • Drunkenness (Galatians 5:21)
  • Homosexuality (I Corinthians 6:9-10)
  • Stealing (I Corinthians 6:9-10)
  • Stubbornness (I Samuel 15:22-23)
  • Impurity (Galatians 5:19)
  • Hatred/Bitterness (Galatians 5:20)
  • Envy/Jealousy (Galatians 5:20)
  • Selfishness (Galatians 5:20)
  • Arrogance (II Corinthians 12:20; Galatians 5:20)
  • Murder (I Corinthians 6:9-10)
  • Adultery (I Corinthians 6:9-10)
  • Greed (I Corinthians 6:9-10; Ephesians 5:5)
  • Lying (Revelation 22:12-16)
Ask God to take away your heart of stone and give you a heart that is willing to be broken over your sin, a heart that is willing to change.
A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. {Ezekiel 36:26-27}

For Those Who Have Been Hurt by Words

>> Tuesday, July 24, 2012

I came across this video while perusing The Identity Shift. This is an extremely poignant, direct, and sobering presentation of the power of words/the tongue.

Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue.
{Psalm 52:4}

The tongue of the just is as choice silver:
{Proverbs 10:20}

The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.
{Proverbs 10:31}

The tongue of the wise is health.
{Proverbs 12:18}

The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.
{Proverbs 15:2}

A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.
{Proverbs 15:4}

He that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.
{Proverbs 17:20}

Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
{Proverbs 18:21}

Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.
{Proverbs 21:23}

But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

{Matthew 12:36-37}

But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.
{Galatians 5:15}

Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
{James 3:3-10}

Isaiah 40

{Isaiah 40}

1  Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.
2  Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the LORD'S hand double for all her sins.
3  The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
4  Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:
5  And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
6  The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:
7  The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.
8  The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
9  O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!
10  Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.
11  He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.
12  Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?
13  Who hath directed the Spirit of the LORD, or being his counsellor hath taught him?
14  With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?
15  Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing.
16  And Lebanon is not sufficient to burn, nor the beasts thereof sufficient for a burnt offering.
17  All nations before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him less than nothing, and vanity.
18  To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him?
19  The workman melteth a graven image, and the goldsmith spreadeth it over with gold, and casteth silver chains.
20  He that is so impoverished that he hath no oblation chooseth a tree that will not rot; he seeketh unto him a cunning workman to prepare a graven image, that shall not be moved.
21  Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth?
22  It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:
23  That bringeth the princes to nothing; he maketh the judges of the earth as vanity.
24  Yea, they shall not be planted; yea, they shall not be sown: yea, their stock shall not take root in the earth: and he shall also blow upon them, and they shall wither, and the whirlwind shall take them away as stubble.
25  To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One.
26  Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.
27  Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the LORD, and my judgment is passed over from my God?
28  Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.
29  He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.
30  Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:
31  But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

Have a wonderful Lord's Day!

Examining Your Responses

>> Saturday, July 21, 2012

Just as there are times of joy, there are also times if suffering during the course of life. You may have suffered abuse, abandonment, or rejection. Perhaps you are hurting over a failed marriage or failed relationships/friendships. You may think God has forgotten you, or doesn't care about you. Your heart has grown cold, angry, perhaps bitter, toward God. Psalm 31:7 says,
I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities.
David didn't rejoice because he was suffering. He was able to rejoice because he knew God was there and would always be with him.

Life has not given you what you expected. You want more. The world tells you that you deserve more. Proverbs 21:2 says,
Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.
 Satan is the father of lies (John 8:44). He wants to keep you from facing the truth about your unbiblical responses to the hurts you have faced, because denial keeps you in bondage to him. When you live in denial, you cannot know God intimately or enjoy fellowship with Him. Satan's mission is accomplished.
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. {John 8:32}
 If you are willing to face the truth, the truth will set you free - free from your sinful responses to circumstances in your life.

Psalm 142 describes a trying time in David's life.

I cried unto the LORD with my voice; with my voice unto the LORD did I make my supplication.

I poured out my complaint before him; I shewed before him my trouble.

When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path. In the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me.

I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.

I cried unto thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.

Attend unto my cry; for I am brought very low: deliver me from my persecutors; for they are stronger than I.

Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name: the righteous shall compass me about; for thou shalt deal bountifully with me.

David was hiding in a cave because he was being pursued by Saul. You are constantly being pursued by Satan and your fleshly nature, but you do not have to give in.
But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof. {Romans 13:14}
David was in desperate need. He was honest about his feelings and his need, but his focus was entirely on God. He was able to have joy in the midst of distressing circumstances because his focus was entirely on God.
{ Stop regarding all the unpleasant things as interruptions of one's 'real' life. They are precisely one's real life. - C.S. Lewis }

Have you lived in denial about your unbiblical responses? What truth do you need to face about your unbiblical responses? Don't put it off any longer - make those responses right today so your relationship with God can be restored and you can live with the joy of the Lord in your heart!

Satan's Lies vs. God's Truth

>> Wednesday, July 18, 2012

When you are in the valley of depression and/or discouragement, your mind is weak and particularly prone to believe Satan's lies, and he knows this. Satan uses our times in the valley (when we're discourage or depressed) to ensnare us in the bondage of self-absorption. Self-absorption takes your focus off of God and His truth and onto yourself. That's why it is extremely important that you replace Satan's lies with God's truth as soon as they come to your mind. You need to remind yourself of the truths you have neglected in order to reaffirm them in your mind and heart to avoid this trap and experience victory.

What better way to combat Satan's lies and remind yourself of God's truths than with Truth itself, the Word of God?

Below is a list of some of the most common lies Satan uses to try to ensnare us. I have paired each lie with at least one verse to help remind you of what God has to say about that particular lie.

Satan's Lie: "No one cares, including God."
God's Truth: Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee. {Jeremiah 31:3}

Satan's Lie: "I'm no good."
God's Truth: Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. {2 Corinthians 5:17}

Satan's Lie: "I'm all alone."
God's Truth: I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. {Hebrews 15:3b}

Satan's Lie: "I don't need God."
God's Truth: I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. {John 15:5}

Satan's Lie: "This problem is beyond help."
God's Truth: Is any thing too hard for the LORD? {Genesis 18:14}

Satan's Lie: "Nothing will ever change."
God's Truth: ...to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified. {Isaiah 61:3}
Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. {Psalm 30:5b}

Satan's Lie: "I should be afraid of the unknown."
God's Truth: For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. {Jeremiah 29:11}

Satan's Lie: "These feelings of hopelessness will never change."
God's Truth: Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: {Psalm 42:5, 11}
The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. {Lamentations 3:24}

Satan's Lie: "I hate people."
God's Truth: If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also. {I John 4:20-21}

Satan's Lie: "God is angry with me."
God's Truth: The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy ... For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. {Psalm 103:8, 14}

Satan's Lie: "No one understands me."
God's Truth: Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite. {Psalm 147:5}

Satan's Lie: "I hate life."
God's Truth: Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. {John 14:6}

Lessons from Isaiah

>> Monday, July 16, 2012

I recently did a study of the book of Isaiah. (Yes, I know it's Old Testament Prophecy. Yes, I know it's 66 chapters long. No, it wasn't boring in the least. :) ) I was pleasantly surprised and humbled to find that my skepticism about the modern-day relevance of this book was completely misguided.

Below is a list of some of the truths I learned and/or was reminded of through my study of Isaiah.

1. God is offended by religious ritual, however impressive, if it conceals an empty heart and a careless life (1:10-17; 58:1-12; 66:1-4).

2. God despises all manifestations of human pride (2:10-17; 10:33-34; 13:11; 16:6; 23:9; 28:1-4).

3. The idols that man creates are destined for destruction (2:20-21; 19:1; 31:6-7; 44:9-20; 46:1-7).

4. Though God's judgment will reduce His people to a remnant, His final purpose is the joyful triumph of His grace (1:9; 6:1-12; 35:1-10; 40:1-2; 49:13-16; 51:3; 54:7-8; 55:12-13).

5. God is able to judge people by rendering them deaf and blind to His word (6:9-10; 28:11-13; 29:9-14; 42:18-25).

6. The world's only hope is bound up in one man - the promised Davidic king, the servant of the Lord, the anointed preacher of the Gospel, and the lone victor over evil (4:2; 7:14; 9:2-7; 11:1-10; 42:1-9; 49:1-13; 50:4-9; 52:13-53:12; 63:1-6).

7. God is actively using creation and history, even the wrongdoings of man, for His own glory (10:5-19; 13:1-27:13; 36:1-39:8; 40:12-26; 44:24-45:13).

8. With a great and holy God ruling all things, man's duty is a repentant trust in Him alone (7:9; 10:20; 12:2; 26:3-4; 28:12, 16; 30:15-18; 31:1; 32:17-18; 36:1-37:38; 40:31; 42:17; 50:10; 55:1-7; 57:13, 15; 66:2).

9. When God's people feel abandoned by God, they often (foolishly) put their trust in worldly powers (7:1-8:22; 28:14-22; 30:1-17; 31:1-3; 39:1-8; 40:27; 49:14; 51:12-13).

10. God will uphold His own cause with a world-transforming display of His glory (4:2-6; 11:10; 35:1-12; 40:3-5; 52:10; 59:19; 60:1-3; 66:18).

11. God uses predictive prophecy to prove that His hand is guiding human history (41:1-4, 21-29; 44:6-8; 44:24-45:13; 46:8-11; 48:3-11).

12. The wrath of God is to be feared above all else (5:25; 9:12, 17, 19, 21; 10:4-6; 13:9, 13; 30:27; 34:2; 59:18; 63:1-6; 66:15-16, 24).
