Prayer of Thomas Merton

>> Sunday, July 14, 2013

This prayer was printed on the front page of the bulletin of the church I attend. With everything that's happened over the last few months - and in some cases, still happening - the timing could not have been more perfect (thank you, Lord!). I hope it will be an encouragement to you, as well.

My Lord God,

I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it. Therefore I will trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.

Amen.

Blessings for Obedience

>> Monday, September 3, 2012

While all biblical character qualities are important, obedience - specifically, obedience to God's commands - is a foundational character trait of the Christian life. Many other character qualities stem from obedience.

If you grew up in a Christian home, you were probably taught to "obey quickly, sweetly, and completely," or you weren't really obeying  (a common cliché in Christian circles).

Someone has defined obedience as "complete submission to God's revealed will." I rather like that definition. It's been helpful to me as I seek to grow in this area of my life.

After God gave instruction to Moses about the Law (later called the Mosaic Law), Moses listed the blessings they would receive if they chose to fully obey God's Law.

And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: and all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God.
Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field.
Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep.
Blessed shall be thy basket and thy store.
Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out.
The LORD shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face: they shall come out against thee one way, and flee before thee seven ways.
The LORD shall command the blessing upon thee in thy storehouses, and in all that thou settest thine hand unto; and he shall bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
The LORD shall establish thee an holy people unto himself, as he hath sworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, and walk in his ways.
And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the LORD; and they shall be afraid of thee.
And the LORD shall make thee plenteous in goods, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers to give thee.
The LORD shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.
And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them:
{Deuteronomy 28:1-13}

Job and Jeremiah also mention some of the blessings of obedience.

If they obey and serve him [God], they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures.
{Job 36:11}

Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of the LORD, which I speak unto thee: so it shall be well unto thee, and thy soul shall live.
{Jeremiah 38:20}

Theses verses certainly aren't an exhaustive list of the blessings God bestows on obedient Christians - I'm sure there are other verses/principles I've overlooked. The verses I've listed above make it clear that God blesses obedience - "complete submission to God's revealed will."

Even with all the blessings and "benefits" that result from obedience, we should obey simply because . . . God said to. That should be enough for us.

Are you obeying for the blessings and "benefits," or are you obeying simply because you want to please God and honor His command to obey?

Something to think about.

Jehovah Jireh!

>> Thursday, August 16, 2012

God has blessed me with yet another job.

Yes, a second job!

I am more excited and grateful than any words can express. When it rains blessings, it pours!

A few months ago, I had applied to teach at a private Christian school just down the road from our house. My brother, who currently attends there, informed me of their lack of any kind of a performing arts/drama program, so I decided to give it a go and see if they were interested in starting a program of that sort.

Several weeks later, Mom met with the upper school administrator to discuss my brother's upcoming academic schedule. She mentioned my application and expressed interest in discussing employment opportunities with me. We talked the next day, and I was hired(!). "I don't normally hire people without laying eyes on them, but I feel that I can make an exception for you."

The school faculty has been dwindling over the past several weeks. Some have answered the call to full-time mission work outside the U.S. Others have resigned due to various circumstances. There is a real need for additional faculty members, and God has seen fit to bless me with the opportunity to help meet that need.

The school doesn't have the resources or space for a drama/performing arts program, but I will be able to blend my performance training with my interest in teaching, my love of storytelling, and my heart for children all into one job. How exciting is that!

This week is "planning week" for the faculty and staff. We have been meeting every morning to iron out as many kinks as we can before school starts Monday morning. The closer Monday gets, the more excited I become. I can hardly wait to see what the Lord will do during this school year.

Just a few short weeks ago, I was unemployed with an ever-shrinking list of ideas of where to apply for work. Now I have two incredible jobs with tasks the Lord has gifted me in, working in a Christian environment with coworkers and bosses who are strong in the faith. I never imagined my job search would end in such a way. God certainly "is able to do exceedinly abundantly above all that we ask or think" (Ephesians 3:20)!

As I mentioned before, we are working to get all the last-minute details together to prepare for the beginning of the school year next week. Please pray for us as we do so. Pray that the Lord will use us to help these children and teenagers to learn and grow, both spiritually and academically. Pray that we won't lose sight of the big picture as the school year gets underway and things become hectic.

Looking back at how the last few weeks have unfolded, I am reminded that God is Jehovah Jireh, "the Lord Who Provides." It is encouraging and comforting to see how He has manifested that Name through the circumstances He has providentally orchestrated to provide these blessed opportunities for me.

In Matthew 6 and Luke 12, Jesus illustrates the loving provision of Jehovah Jireh and tells us how we are to respond to this loving provision.
Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: and yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
{Matthew 6:25-32}

And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.

Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest?

Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?

And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.
{Luke 12:22-30}

 Jehovah Jireh knows His children have needs, and He always provides for them. Always.

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
{Philippians 4:19}

Jehovah Jireh has blessed me beyond measure by providing for me in a truly incredible way, and I praise Him for it.

. . . and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
Malachi 3:10b

He Answers Prayer

>> Sunday, August 5, 2012

As many of you know, I have been looking for employment for quite a while. God has seen fit to bless me with a job that far exceeded my expectations. But I'm getting ahead of myself . . .

Dad saw a "help wanted" ad in the local newspaper for a company in need of a secretary. He called the number provided in the ad and talked with the owner's wife (who serves as the current secretary) to find out more about the position. He mentioned that he had a daughter (me) who had recently graduated from college and was looking for work. When she asked where I had graduated from, she was shocked when Dad told her I had graduated from Bob Jones University. She's a BJU grad as well, and she had been praying earlier that day for the Lord to send her someone from her alma mater. She needs help with payroll, billpay, and other financial aspects of the business, so she needs someone she can trust. She told Dad she would call back after she had thought and prayed about this answer to her prayers.

She called the next day to set up an interview with me on the following day. The interview wasn't really an "interview," per se. We chatted for almost an hour about our families, our churches, our experiences at BJU, and about God's remarkable answer to both of our prayers. Praising God together for answered prayer was a beautiful thing to experience.

When I left the building, I was an official employee. I am so thankful to be blessed with a job that pays well, in a good environment, with such wonderful bosses. I never dreamed that God would provide in such an incredible way, but He did. He can, He does, and He will. Not because we deserve it, but because of who we are in His Son, Jesus Christ. He delights in giving good gifts to His children, because He is good.

A big, heartfelt thank you to everyone who prayed for me. God answered your prayers in an incredible way.

Don't be discouraged if God hasn't answered your prayer(s) yet. He will answer you in His timing, in His infinite wisdom, in His way. And when He does, He will surprise you with an answer far better than anything you can imagine.

God has given you His promise
That He hears and answers prayer.
He will heed your supplication
If you cast on Him your care.

He will answer every prayer,
He will answer every prayer,
Go to Him in faith believing,
He will answer every prayer.

He will not withhold one blessing,
He will give you what is best.
God will answer by His Spirit,
Every one who makes request.

He will answer every prayer,
He will answer every prayer,
Go to Him in faith believing,
He will answer every prayer.

He can hear the great petition,
And the smallest, over there.
Unto God pray without ceasing,
He will answer every prayer.

He will answer every prayer,
He will answer every prayer,
Go to Him in faith believing,
He will answer every prayer.

Take to God your plans and failures,
Any time and anywhere.
No one ever goes unanswered,
For He answers every prayer.

                                 Mary Bernstecher

 Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee . . .
{Job 22:27}

He shall call upon me, and I will answer him:
{Psalm 91:15a}

And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.
{Isaiah 65:24}

Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.
{Jeremiah 29:12}

Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.
{Jeremiah 33:3}

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
{Matthew 7:7-11}

 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.
{Matthew 21:22}

And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
{John 14:13-14}

If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
{John 15:7}

Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
{John 16:23}

In every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
{Philippians 4:6b}

The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
{James 5:16b}

And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
{I John 5:14-15}

What Children Can Teach Us

>> Wednesday, July 25, 2012

"Every child you encounter is a divine appointment." {Wess Stafford}

"Only where children gather is there any real chance of fun." {Mignon McLaughlin}

"There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children." {Nelson Mandela}

"Children are our most valuable resource." {Herbert Hoover}

"Children are the hands by which we take hold of heaven." {Henry Ward Beecher}

That's just a small sampling of the many, many things have been said about children. Whether you are a parent, a grandparent, or someone who has interacted with children in various settings, you know how trying children can be for your sanctification (*wink*). Although children certainly can be a handful, there are a great many things we "older folks" can learn from them.

Scripture has plenty to say about this.

Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.
{Psalm 127:3}

Children are blessings from the Lord, and are to be treated accordingly. If God has entrusted children to your care, He has given you the privilege of being responsible for the lives - both physical and spiritual - of those little blessings.

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
{Proverbs 22:6}

If you are a parent, you are responsible for your child's growth and development - physical, emotional, spiritual, and in every other aspect. Yes, this includes training and instruction, but they also learn by example and observation. You know the saying: "Actions speak louder than words." Children are watching you and learning from you, even if you aren't always conscious of it. Someone has said, "Children are great imitators. So give them something great to imitate."

Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
{Proverbs 22:15}

Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.
{Proverbs 23:13}

A child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.
{Proverbs 29:15}

Children are fallen, sinful people, just like we "older folks" are. Discipline is a necessary aspect of biblical parenthood in order to raise children who fear God, obey authority and respect others. However, this does not justify abuse or neglect. It must be done in such a way that the child understands it is being done out of love for him/her.

Jesus had much to say regarding children.

At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, ad said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me. But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. {Matthew 18:1-6}

Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. {Mark 10:15}

Children have a simple, humble faith and trust in those they love (parents, grandparents, older siblings, etc). They have a confident expectation that those who love them will take care of them. That's the kind of faith Jesus tells us is part of the process of salvation.

Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven. {Matthew 19:13-14}

And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them. {Mark 10:13-14, 16}

Jesus chided the disciples for trying to keep the children away from Him. They were just as important to Him as the adults He was ministering to.

Children bring a tremendous amount of joy and laughter wherever they go, and that certainly is a blessing. God manifests His sense of humor through the amusing things children do and say. Some of the funniest things I've ever heard have come from the mouths of children.

When children are selfish and/or disobedient, it can certainly try our patience as we seek to discourage such behavior, discipline them for it (when necessary), and try to encourage obedient, others-focused behavior. Such times serve as a sobering rebuke about how we treat God and/or respond to His commands sometimes.

A Little Child

The nature of a little child, I simply could not see
How such a nature could become a part of me.
The pride of years would never let my Savior to the Throne,
But crowned me King and kept me where I reigned, just I alone.

This pride, oh, what a horrid thing! Kept me from bending low,
So, through the Kingdom's door, you see, I simply could not go.
Thus all the beauty of His realm was on the other side;
Oh, what I missed, oh, what I lacked, because of my old pride!

Then, oh the wonder of that day, I saw what I should do;
I said, "Lord Jesus, I step down and give the throne to You."
And so when I by faith obeyed, a miracle of grace,
Within this haughty heart of mine, that moment did take place.

For all at once I knew, I felt humble and meek and mild,
And saw that God had given me the nature of a child.
Now, would I, dare I, could I try once more the Kingdom's door?
I longed to, yet it looked so low, so near unto the floor.

But beckoned by the pierced Hand which had removed my sin,
Upon my knees, now weak and small a child, I entered in.
I entered in, oh bless the day, I entered through that door,
And all His Kingdom lay ahead for children to explore.

And so, diminished as I am, stripped of all else but grace,
I live, a trusting little child, and look upon His face.
And now there is but One supreme who rules and wears the crown,
And that great miracle began the moment I stepped down.

Now it's your turn: do you have any additional thoughts or insights? What other lessons can you think of that the Lord has taught you through children? Leave a comment below!

Liberty in Christ

>> Wednesday, July 4, 2012

I love this time of year. Family and friend get-togethers, cookouts, patriotic music...and of course, the fireworks. Nothing stokes the patriotic fires better than a good ol'-fashioned 4th of July celebration. It's a time to honor our nation's heritage and to celebrate the freedoms we enjoy as Americans.
I believe in America because we have great dreams - and because we have the opportunity to make those dreams come true.  {Wendell L. Wilkie}
National honor is national property of the highest value. {James Monroe}
 The cement of this union [America] is the heart-blood of every American. {Thomas Jefferson}
We dare not forget that we are the heirs of that first revolution. {John F. Kennedy}

Even more important than our earthly liberty, though, is our spiritual liberty in Christ.

Before we were saved, we were slaves to sin (and the Law that governs sin). We were helpless to save ourselves from the burden of trying to uphold the Law in our sin-enslaved condition. When Christ died on the Cross, he provided the means necessary to free us from this bondage.
...our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is free from sin. {Romans 6:6-7}
Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: but when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons... Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. {Galatians 4:3-7}

Our helpless, sin-ridden condition died on the Cross with Christ. Christ rose again, but our sins remained lifeless, and will remain lifeless forever. Never again will they be able to condemn us, control us, or hold us back.
For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. {Romans 6:14}
 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption... {Romans 8:1-15}
...where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. {2 Corinthians 3:17}
Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. {Galatians 5:1}
Christ's death, burial, and resurrection is the spiritual "Declaration of Independence" that we signed when we accepted Him as our Savior. The Bible is the spiritual "Constitution" whereby we are to govern our spiritual lives. We are to be the spiritual "Statues of Liberty" in the world - beacons of hope for spiritual freedom in a sin-cursed, sin-enslaved world.

During this time of celebration, remember to celebrate the liberty you have in Christ, as well. Take some time to thank Him for the spiritual liberty you enjoy because of Him. He deserves our gratitude.

"Like a Tree"

>> Monday, July 2, 2012

Photo by Myrna Moore
As I read over Psalm 1 again last night, meditating on verse 3 (specifically the phrase "like a tree") generated some additional thoughts that I would like to share with you.

"And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither..." {Psalm 1:3}

Healthy trees have reliable access to a water supply. Healthy Christians frequently access their spiritual water supply - communion with God through prayer and the study of His Word.

Healthy trees bear fruit/leaves, or are in the process of preparing to bear fruit/leaves. You might not always see it on the outside (during the winter, for example), but they are inwardly preparing everything they need to bear fruit/leaves. Healthy Christians also bear outward fruit that results from inward preparation.

Healthy trees are firmly rooted, but flexible. They adapt to the changing seasons and weather patterns as necessary. Healthy Christians are firmly rooted in the truth of God's Word while being adaptable to the changing seasons of life.

Do you have any additional thoughts on this verse? In what other ways are healthy trees and healthy Christians similar?

Blessed is the Man...

>> Sunday, July 1, 2012

I started a study on the book of Psalms today, and it put me in mind to share a Psalm with you. What better place to start than at the beginning with Psalm 1? It's one of the most widely-known Psalms, so you may be tempted to skim or breeze through it; please take the time to read it thoughtfully and meditate on what David is trying to tell us.

{Psalm 1}
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither, and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so, but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgement, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous; but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

David gives both positive and negative guidelines for the blessed man - what he does, and what he doesn't do. Simply put:

  • He does not follow those who do not fear God.
  • He delights in the Lord and meditates on His Word.

 These are the two basic principles to pattern your life after if you wanted to see the blessing of God in your life. Those who follow the way of the wicked will experience God's judgment; in contrast, God promises that He will cause the souls of the righteous to flourish.

In Psalm 1, David presents two ways of life: the way of the wicked and the way of the blessed/righteous. You and I must choose daily which path we will choose.

What other thoughts do you have on Psalm 1? What other principles, lessons, or contrasts do you see in this passage? Feel free to comment below.

Friends: Gifts to be Treasured

>> Wednesday, June 13, 2012

Photo by Myrna Moore
Today I had the unexpected blessing of receiving a phone call from a very dear friend whom I haven't heard from in six months. (Yes, there were tears, but they were tears of joy.) We were able to   catch up on each other's lives, share burdens, and rejoice in what the Lord is teaching us and doing for us. To be honest, I was a little sad when we had to say goodbye, but so thankful that we had been able to talk (finally!). I have missed her more than words can express.

Friendship is a beautiful manifestation of God's loving care for us. I believe that with all my heart.

Is maith a sgathan suil caraide.
A friend's eye is a good looking-glass.
 {Gaelic Proverb}

A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. {Proverbs 17:17}

Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. {Proverbs 27:17}

Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel. {Proverbs 27:9}

I am so thankful for the godly friends God has placed in my life. How often I so foolishly take them for granted! They help me up when I fall, encourage me when I'm discouraged, point me to Christ when I take my eyes off Him, put up with my silly antics and bad moods, make me laugh when I don't even want to smile, and so much more. I am not what I ought to be, but I hope I can be at least a fraction of the blessing to my friends that they have been to me. I am forever indebted to them for their kindness, generosity, exhortation, and encouragement. Thank You, Lord, for the tremendous gift of friendship!

True, godly friends are bits of Heaven on earth - precious gifts to be treasured.

Circle me, Lord.
Keep protection near
and danger afar.
Circle me, Lord.
Keep hope within.
Keep doubt without.
Circle me, Lord.
Keep light near
and darkness afar.
Circle me, Lord.
Keep peace within,
Keep evil out.

"If God sends you down a stony path, may he give you strong shoes." - Tradition

May God give you
for every storm, a rainbow;
for every tear, a smile;
for every care, a promise;
and a blessing for each trial.
For every problem life sends,
a faithful friend to share;
for every sigh, a sweet song,
and an answer for each prayer.

You are the peace of all things calm
You are the place to hide from harm
You are the light that shines in the dark
You are the heart's eternal spark
You are the door that's open wide
You are the guest who waits inside
You are the stranger at the door
You are the calling of the poor
You are my Lord and with me from ill
You are the light, the truth, the way
You are my Savior this very day.

May you see God's light on the path ahead
when the road you walk is dark.
May you always hear,
even in your hour of sorrow,
the gentle singing of the lark.
When times are hard, may hardness
never turn your heart to stone.
May you always remember
when the shadows fall -
you do not walk alone.

Thanks to Thee, O God, that I have risen today,
to the rising of this life itself;
may it be to Thine own glory, O god of every gift,
and to the glory, aid Thou my soul.
With the aiding of Thine own mercy,
even as I clothe my body with wool,
cover Thou my soul with the shadow of Thy wing.
Help me to avoid every sin,
and the source of every sin to forsake,
and as the mist scatters on the crest of the hills,
may each ill haze clear from my soul, O God.

Christ be with me
Christ before me
Christ behind me
Christ in me
Christ beneath be
Christ above me
Christ on my right
Christ on my left
Christ where I lie
Christ where I sit
Christ where I arise
Christ in the heart of every man
who thinks of me
Christ in the mouth of every man
who speaks of me
Christ in every eye that sees me
Christ in every ear that hears me
Salvation is of the Lord.
- Saint Patrick
